The Head Lifeguard at the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA is responsible for the safety and well-being of all pool patrons and participants in aquatic programs. Maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas in accordance with policies and procedures. The Head Lifeguard assures the well-being for each participant and staff in line with YMCA of the USA and association guidelines in accordance with their training. Essential Functions:Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to the following:Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with members, colleagues, guests, volunteers, and vendors.Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers, members, program participants, and colleagues at all levels of the organization; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.Supervises and motivates other guards to follow the YMCA standards, Mission, and Core Values. Ensures the lifeguards are rotating properly and receiving adequate breaks within their scheduled breaks.Responsible for stocking and reporting any needed first aid equipment; maintaining all records (chemical, contamination, accident, and incident). Prepares and inspects all equipment and materials prior to each shift. Cleans and stores equipment as per procedures.Maintains physical presence, remains alert at all times while on duty, maintains constant visual attention to swimmers, and remains aware of pool surroundings and participants in the pool.Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the "safe-in-six" model; completes related reports as required, and supports other staff to do the same.Knows, follows, and enforces all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including those for the prevention of child abuse; and supports other staff to do the same.Ambassador of all YMCA programs with a focus on Aquatics programs, schedules, and member engagement.Follows all aquatic procedures and guidelines including those pertaining to health and safety, chemical testing, forms, reports, and staff expectations as required by the YMCA and the state health department code, and supports other staff to do the same.Is informed on all changes to schedules and reads all posted notices and ensures that staff are aware.Attends all mandatory meetings and trainings.YMCA Leadership Competencies:Critical Thinking & Decision Making: Makes informed decisions based on logic, data, and sound judgment.Inclusion: Values all people for their unique talents, and takes an active role in promoting practices that support diversity, inclusion, and global work, as well as cultural competence.Emotional Maturity: Demonstrates ability to understand and manage emotions effectively in all situations.Communication & Influence: Listens and expresses self effectively and in a way that engages, inspires, and builds commitment to the Y's cause.Functional Expertise: Executes superior technical skills for the role.Experience, Education, and Qualifications:Must be a minimum of 21 years of age and have 2 years of experience as a certified lifeguardBasic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration certification - Required for job placement Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent certification - Required for job placement Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readinessMust demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standardsMust successfully complete a swimming and physical skills test upon hireDemonstrates leadership skills in an outgoing, friendly, assertive, professional, and mature mannerAbility to lead and motivate othersDemonstrates excellent planning and organizational skillsExceptional interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills, as well as the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with Members, Directors, and StaffRemains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by othersEffective communication skills necessary to inform, counsel, motivate, and support membersMust be observant, safety-conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergencyAble to work flexible schedulesTrainings & Certifications:Must complete online New Employee Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, Mandated Reporter, Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, and Employee Safety trainings prior to start of position.Must hold and maintain American Red Cross, YMCA, or equivalent lifeguard certification - required for job placement.Must hold and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications - required for job placement.Must complete Emergency Oxygen Administration Certification within the first 90 days of employment.
